Mud therapy is one of the treatments most closely associated with Druskininkai. Long before modern wellness menus appeared, visitors came to the resort for its mineral springs, peat and sapropel mud, rest and medical supervision. Today, a therapeutic mud bath or application can still be booked at several medical spas in town—but it is worth understanding what the treatment is, what research actually supports, and which option suits you.

This guide combines the history of Druskininkai as a health resort with practical, current information about mud treatments. Prices and programmes can change, so confirm details directly with the provider before booking.

What is a therapeutic mud bath?

Medical mud treatment is also called pelotherapy. In Druskininkai, providers commonly use peat mud or sapropel—fine organic lake sediment—heated and applied either to the whole body or to selected areas. Depending on the centre, the treatment may be offered as:

  • A mud bath: therapeutic mud mixed with mineral or fresh water, usually for about 15–20 minutes.
  • A full or partial wrap: warm mud placed over the body or a particular area.
  • A local application: mud applied to joints, the back, hands, feet or another prescribed area.

The experience is different from a cosmetic clay mask. Medical spas control the temperature, duration and area treated, and some require a consultation or prescription before the first session.

A short history of mud treatment in Druskininkai

Druskininkai became an official health resort in 1794, when the therapeutic potential of its mineral springs was formally recognised. By the early nineteenth century, unofficial mineral-water and mud treatments were already being offered to visitors.

The first purpose-built wooden bathing establishment opened in 1838 with 14 baths and was later expanded. In 1896, a much larger brick spa building opened with around 150 baths and facilities for brine, mud and other treatments. This was an important step in turning Druskininkai from a place of local remedies into an organised European resort.

A dedicated mud-treatment building was constructed between 1954 and 1960, with 72 treatment cabins. The complex was reconstructed in 2003 for mineral-water and mud procedures and modernised again in 2019. The architecture and medical technology have changed, but mud therapy remains part of the town’s identity.

What benefits are supported by evidence?

Mud therapy is not a cure-all. The strongest modern evidence concerns musculoskeletal conditions, particularly osteoarthritis. A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of 33 studies involving 2,651 participants found moderate-certainty evidence that pelotherapy can reduce pain and improve physical function, with the clearest results in osteoarthritis. Reported adverse effects were generally mild, and the studies did not show an increase in serious adverse events.

Researchers suggest several possible mechanisms: sustained warmth may relax muscles and improve local circulation; the pressure and physical properties of the mud may reduce stiffness; and mineral and organic compounds may contribute to local anti-inflammatory effects. However, treatment protocols vary, long-term evidence is more limited, and mud therapy should be viewed as a complementary treatment—not a replacement for diagnosis, medication, rehabilitation or other care prescribed by a clinician.

Many guests also value the simple experience of warmth, quiet and supervised rest. That relaxation benefit is real to the visitor, even when it is not the primary outcome measured in clinical trials.

What to expect during a session

  1. Screening or consultation. A clinician or therapist may ask about your health and choose the type, temperature and duration.
  2. Application or immersion. Most published sessions in Druskininkai last about 15–20 minutes.
  3. Shower and rest. After the mud is removed, allow time to cool down, drink water and rest.
  4. A treatment course. Medical programmes may recommend several sessions rather than a single visit, depending on the goal and your health.

Do not schedule a mud treatment immediately after a heavy meal, strenuous exercise or alcohol. Bring swimwear and slippers if the centre requests them, and arrive early enough for registration.

Who should take extra care?

Warm whole-body mud treatments may not be suitable during pregnancy, fever or acute inflammation, or for people with certain cardiovascular, circulatory, oncological or other serious conditions. Individual centres publish different contraindications because the intensity and treated area vary.

Tell the provider about your health conditions and medicines, follow its screening process, and choose a local application if a clinician recommends it. Stop the session if you feel dizzy, short of breath or unwell.
