What is Lelija?
Lelija is an independent cultural initiative in the town centre. It opened in 2026 in a former clothing shop within the old post-office building. The team wanted a place where contemporary art, unexpected ideas and local conversation could meet. Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT reported on the artists behind the initiative; the Scanorama film festival describes the building’s earlier use.
It is not a museum with a fixed permanent display. Its programme changes: past events have included contemporary exhibitions, European film screenings, creative writing and discussions. A Dzūkija food-and-art exhibition brought photography, drawings and installations together with stories of local culinary heritage. Pair it with Menų Kalvė
For a second view of the town’s creative life, visit Menų Kalvė, the craft centre at M. K. Čiurlionio g. 27. Professional and folk artists work under one roof; visitors can see exhibitions, open studios and handmade pieces, and some educational sessions let you try a technique yourself. The centre lists free entry to exhibitions and open workshops, with fees for educational activities. Its published regular hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 10:00–18:00, but check ahead for holiday changes or book a workshop in advance.
Lelija offers a changing programme of contemporary culture; Menų Kalvė brings you closer to makers and traditional or applied arts.
