Only around 30 kilometres from Druskininkai, Merkinė is one of the most rewarding short excursions in southern Lithuania. The small town stands where the Merkys meets the Nemunas, surrounded by the pine forests of Dzūkija National Park. In a few hours, you can climb a historic hillfort, explore the story of an old royal town, enter one of the region’s oldest churches and look across a landscape shaped by rivers and forest.
Merkinė is compact enough for a relaxed half-day visit. Allow a full day if you want to add the observation tower, a longer meal or another stop in Dzūkija National Park.
Why visit Merkinė?
Today Merkinė feels peaceful, but its location once gave it considerable strategic importance. A castle stood on the hillfort above the rivers and helped defend the region during conflicts with the Teutonic Order. Merkinė later became an important royal town and received Magdeburg rights in 1569.
King Władysław IV Vasa died in Merkinė in 1648. The town also preserves memories of its Jewish community, the Second World War and post-war resistance. This layered history is one reason to visit the museum rather than treating Merkinė only as a viewpoint.
A practical Merkinė walking route
1. Begin at the Dzūkija National Park Visitor Centre
Start at the Merkinė Visitor Centre, Vilniaus g. 3, where the exhibition introduces the rivers, forests, wildlife and communities of Dzūkija National Park.
The centre is useful for current information about trails, seasonal conditions and other places in the park. Published opening hours and admission prices can change, so check the official visitor-centre page before travelling.
2. Explore Merkinė Regional Museum
Continue to the Merkinė Regional Museum, S. Dariaus ir S. Girėno a. 1. Its modern exhibition explains the vanished and revived town: the castle and royal period, the death of Władysław IV Vasa, the destruction of the old town hall, the former Jewish community and the 1945 attack on Merkinė by Lithuanian partisans.
Remains of the 16th-century town hall can be seen in the museum basement. The museum also offers guided walks. Consult its official visitor information for current hours and prices.

3. Visit the Church of the Assumption
A short walk from the square brings you to the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Dating from the 16th century, it is regarded as the oldest surviving church in the Dainava region. Its modest exterior contains a notably rich historic interior, including sacred artworks dating to around 1600.

4. Climb Merkinė Hillfort
The essential stop is Merkinė Hillfort. Wooden steps lead to the former castle site above the confluence of the Merkys and Nemunas. The summit reveals why this location mattered: rivers, floodplain meadows and pine forest stretch out below the steep slopes.
The climb is short but includes numerous steps and can be slippery after rain. Visitors with limited mobility may find the hillfort difficult.
5. Add the Merkinė Observation Tower
If you are travelling by car, continue to the Merkinė Observation Tower. The approximately 25-metre tower overlooks the forests, Nemunas valley and Pastraujo Island landscape. It is a separate stop rather than part of the central walking loop and is free to visit, but the stairs can feel exposed in strong wind, rain or ice.

Optional additions
Merkinė Cross Hill
Visitors interested in modern Lithuanian history can also visit Merkinė Cross Hill, an important memorial to post-war resistance. Treat the site as a place of remembrance rather than a conventional attraction.
The Merkinė Pyramid
The privately created Merkinė Pyramid near Česukai attracts visitors interested in contemporary spiritual places. It is not part of Merkinė’s medieval history or an official national-park interpretation site, so consider it an optional, separate visit.

By bus
Intercity buses connect Druskininkai and the Merkinė area, but timetables and stopping points vary. Some services use the Merkinė crossroads rather than the central square, which can add a walk. Check the current timetable and confirm the exact arrival and return stops before buying a ticket.
How long should you allow?
- Two to three hours: visitor centre or museum, church and hillfort.
- Half a day: all central sights plus lunch or the observation tower.
- Full day: Merkinė plus another carefully selected stop in Dzūkija National Park.
When is the best time to go?
Late spring through early autumn offers the easiest walking conditions and the longest opening hours. Autumn adds colour to the river valleys and surrounding forests. Winter can be beautiful, but steps at the hillfort and tower may be icy, while museums and visitor facilities may operate shorter schedules.
Tuesday to Saturday is normally the safest choice if the museum and visitor centre are priorities. Always verify current opening hours, public holidays and guided-tour availability directly with the venues.
Combine history with the landscapes of Dzūkija
Merkinė works especially well for Domi Lini guests because it offers something different from a day in the resort. Druskininkai is centred on mineral water, wellness and leisure; Merkinė adds a hillfort, royal history and a closer introduction to Dzūkija National Park.

Staying at Domi Lini gives you a quiet base in Druskininkai while keeping Merkinė within an easy morning or afternoon drive. After the hillfort steps and forest views, you can return to your apartment for a relaxed evening.
